Expedition Photo Results
30th Oct 2009 06:30 AM
|
The first photos from the camera retrieved by Michael yesterday are here. These were taken by the camera we deployed in May this year.
One of the more interesting photos was this pair of boxing wallabies. Not content with getting their portrait in the limelight on this homepage, they came back 4 months later for a follow up photo-shoot!

Name the cameras!
06th Oct 2009 01:28 AM
|
The 2009 Tasmanian Tiger Expedition will step into its next phase shortly.
Earlier this year we discovered a footprint that featured on the Monster Quest episode "Isle of the Lost Tiger".
You have the chance to name one of our cameras which will focus throughout summer on the location where we found this footprint.
Early descriptions of the thylacine hint that the species may have been migratory - and so we are hoping to get in early and catch the tiger - if it was a tiger - in 2010 that we must have missed by just days in 2009! |

Where Light Meets Dark is pleased to announce an expedition in search of the Tasmanian tiger in Tasmania.
A number of trail cameras have been placed in strategic locations for several weeks. I leave tomorrow to check on these, to contribute to the filming of a documentary, and to attempt to piece together a string of details from one of the thylacine's most well-known historical search expeditions.

Tiger reward just a "stunt"
23rd Nov 2008 09:04 AM
|
The offer of $1.25 million Australian dollars for the live capture of a thylacine (Tasmanian tiger), made by Bulletin magazine in 2005 was today described as just a "stunt".
Newspaper "The Australian" is reporting the appointment of Garry Linnell as editor for newspaper "The Daily Telegraph". Linnell, described as "like a sniffer dog" who will "do almost anything for a story ... even eat animal penises" was editor-in-chief of The Bulletin when the infamous reward was made available.
Linnell had been hired in December 2002 with a simple instruction from the late Kerry Packer: "Son, just make 'em talk about it"
Says the report "Linnell delivered with stunts, such as offering a $1.25 million reward for the capture of a live Tasmanian tiger" and contrasts this with "serious scoops" such as "issues on Melbourne's gangland wars and Annita Keating dishing on her failed marriage"
Despite the "conversation starters" (as the article puts it), it seems it is the Bulletin which has become extinct. The weekly Sydney magazine, which was first published in 1880, ran its last edition on 24 January this year; just one week short of 128 years after the first issue.
Despite not being able to turn around the Bulletin's declining sales, Linnell is now faced with the same task at the Tele which has seen weekday sales drop by 6% over the past 3 years, and Saturday sales by 8%. |

Did the thylacine survive beyond 1936?
27th Jun 2007 01:53 AM
|
Zoologist Dr Jeremy Austin of the University of Adelaide will extract DNA from animal droppings collected by Eric Guiler in the 1950s and 1960s - approximately twenty years after the accepted extinction date.
Dr Austin will also examine mainland thylacine and Tasmanian devil bone material to attempt to determine whether the Tasmanian populations are distinct species.
Working with Oliver Berry from the University of Western Australia, the pair will be searching for evidence of foxes in scats collected from Tasmania |
